It’s been tradition here that the Fall Freeze for us starts on August 15 of each year with Adult League, Classes, Public Skating, and various private events. It’s a celebration each year and this year, we’re ruining it for everyone. And for that, all of us here at the Rink Exchange apologize to our very loyal and supportive ice community.

As of now, we are cancelling all events on August 15-17. We’ll update you daily on progress and further cancellation as we get more information.

So, what happened?

In a nutshell, our refrigerators stopped working. They are old refrigerators that year after year chugs and chugs. Let’s just say they are the Big Compressors That Could. We take great care of them. Constantly do preventative maintenance. Keep them well oiled. And monitor them for performance. It's worth noting, that, given the age, parts aren’t always readily available and when they are, they are very expensive. It’s why we don’t stock them in large quantities. This has played a key role in the delay.

When we started on July 27, Compressor 2 fired up great, but as we started the ice making process, it showed issues with its shaft seal. We were able to fix that issue while Compressor 1 was working to keep the ice stable. We couldn’t build more ice, but it was a quick repair. It took a few days to get parts, but it only delayed us by a couple of days.

Then, when Compressor 2 was fixed and fired back up, Compressor 1 started acting up.

For reference, to build ice, we need two functioning compressors at full capacity.

After some analysis, Compressor 1 needed a top-ended overall. A process that is required about every 4 to 5 years. We do these on a normal schedule so we can avoid service interruptions, but this time Compressor 1 decided it would fail early and during the most critical time period.

To complicate matters, parts for Compressor 1, that were originally ordered back on August 8, still have not arrived. As of today, we still have ice to build, paint to put down, and then lines and logos to install. And then after all that, we still have about an inch of ice to put down that all of you actually skate on. That’s about a four day process. We can do it faster than that in ideal conditions.

At this moment, it’s difficult to ascertain when we’ll be ready because we still don’t have an estimate on when parts are supposed to arrive. We keep hearing today, but that was yesterday and so on. They are a great vendor and have been amazingly supportive of our community over the years. They too are also frustrated by the parts issue.

So, we’re in a holding pattern until Compressor 1 is fixed.

We all really appreciate your patience. Thanks so much!

Summer Work Well Underway

https://www.therinkexchange.com/news-and-events/summer-work-well-underway

https://www.therinkexchange.com/news-and-events/summer-work-well-underway#comments

Uncategorized

Season 7 Opening Day is just under 45 days away and lot of things have been happening to improve the facility in anticipation of your arrival. First off, we’ve worked to improve our ice and to that end recently added Stefan Veach to list of STAR Certified personnel after he complete the Ice Making and Painting Technologies (IMPT) course at NARCE in Columbus, OH this past May. He will add to the already experienced staff responsible for creating the best ice conditions in the Valley.

We’ve also begun large structural work to the north end of the rink where the boards needed some repair. The improvements will straighten and strengthen that area of the boards making them more “true” during use. The improvement should also improve the ice making process in that corner allowing us to have better ice during warmer weather specifically in August and September.

Some structural work is underway on the south end of the rink with the ramp that the ice surfacer uses to get on the ice. This includes structural improvements to the door and threshold to maintain the improvements to that area that was established back in year 1 (if any of you remember that large crevice you know what we’re talking about). Also repairing of a door that was slightly mangled due a driver, whose name shall not be mentioned but rhymes with Lopez, has begun.

We’ve also begun work on the player benches to include a new type of flooring that will be much more resilient. No more holes and nor more residue onto the ice. Replacement of the benches themselves will be completed by opening. Gone will be the pink that was the rink.

In the locker rooms, we’re hard at work painting (mostly touchup), deep cleaning the rest rooms, and making general repairs (to doors, hinges and closures). We’re also taking advantage of the closure to repair hard to reach lights, tiles, and other high items.

Up in the lobby, we’re working to paint and make our rink that much more like home.

On the program front, registration for all adult league, Summer, Fall/Winter, and Spring has opened. Our class registration for Youth Intro to Hockey and Adult Intro to Hockey will open shortly with some new curriculum to make it even more fun for people to learn to play hockey. Last year marked a record number of new players coming into our rink to learn to play hockey. We’ll also be looking at an after school session for both starting in the Fall Term (October).

Youth Hockey registration opened on July 1st with significant changes to its curriculum to better align itself with the USA Hockey American Development Model (ADM) - all with the goal of increasing access to our game. They also have brought back the payment option to registration fees. If you haven’t looked at youth hockey recently, you need to check back in and see what you’re missing.

The Eugene Generals have been working the off-season preparing its entrance into the United State Premiere Hockey League. A 12th season of Eugene Generals hockey is coming to the Rink near you this September.

That’s just a quick snap of what’s going on at the Rink this summer. Looking forward to seeing all of you when the Rink opens up for the Fall Freeze on August 15th (soft opening on August 14th).

- The Rink

Wear Green for our St. Patrick's Skate on Friday, March 18th

https://www.therinkexchange.com/news-and-events/wear-green-for-our-st-patricks-skate-on-friday-march-18th

https://www.therinkexchange.com/news-and-events/wear-green-for-our-st-patricks-skate-on-friday-march-18th#comments

Uncategorized

St. Patrick’s Day is coming up, and what better way to celebrate than having a special public skate! So, let's call this the ultimate TT.

The ice rink itself was built (well repurposed) back in 1989. It was a project Lane County completed with the help of a lot of local citizens many of whom still skate at the rink today. The building used to be a Horse Barn. The rink, in the first few years, was incredibly popular with a pretty large user base, especially when it came to public skating.

Fast forward to 2010 and for various reasons, with the County itself facing large budget cuts of its own, they decided that the rink was no longer as an asset it wanted to finance directly. The rink itself was losing close to $250k per year and by some estimates needed over $1 million in maintenance upgrades.

At the same time, since 2005 the Eugene Generals had been operating in the facility as the area's premiere hockey team playing at the Junior level. When 2010 came along, and the rink decided it needed to shutdown, the Generals came to an agreement with the County that allowed it to operate the facility. The asset (building, land, etc.) would remain public property, but the operations (maintenance, staff, etc.) would be a private venture.

As with all things of this nature, the first year was a "kick the tires" kind of year. The Generals were asked to operate some sections of the rink (namely Public Skating Sessions, some scheduling, and the pro shop) while others including staff and private ice rental remained under the County domain.

With the pro shop being operated privately, it needed a name. At the time, it was assumed that the model that was established would remain. The Generals would only operate public skating sessions and the store. So the team needed to come up with a name that kind of equated with with the Generals. Some on the staff had served in military circles and the name needed a Generals theme. Given it was a store, the name Rink Exchange was crowned. An exchange on a military base is a store where goods and services are bought and sold. It was a good description of exactly what was going on at the time at the Rink. The Rink Exchange was the middle man between the public and the County in exchanging goods and services (namely ice).

Well, as luck would have it, the roles grew, rather quickly. Soon the Exchange had it's own phone number, email addresses, and services. Little by little, the roles increased from operating the pro-shop to running the entire facility completely independently but in partnership with the County. This occurred in June of 2011. By then, the name kind of stuck. The internal users already knew it as the Rink Exchange and with any brand, we just decided it needed to be introduced to the public.

To this day, it really is an Exchange with the ice being the primary good. But services are a huge part as well with major user groups participating in the development of ice sports as well as Rink Exchange run programs such as Adult League, Adult Learn to Play, and Learn to Play for Youth.

The Rink is growing and in some circles larger now than ever in the past. Public skating sessions routinely fetch 150 plus skaters and during the Christmas season that number grows to be over 200 plus skaters. The youth hockey program now sports over 250 participants (a large size as a percentage of the population) and there are now 16 adult league teams playing out of the Rink.

The Annual Eugene Figure Skating Holiday Show brings participants from all over the region and brings in upwards of 1,000 viewers of the show sporting toys for the Toys for Tots Drive.

So as you can see, it really is an Exchange that has brought Ice Sports back into the forefront of the community.

Thanks for the question @mastomonaco!

What's the Call Vol. 1, No. 2

https://www.therinkexchange.com/news-and-events/whats-the-call-vol-1-no-2

https://www.therinkexchange.com/news-and-events/whats-the-call-vol-1-no-2#comments

Uncategorized

Progressive Penalties This week we had our first major penalty in the RHL for Fighting. A second fight in the same season on the same team results in an automatic three game suspension.

With regards to player substitution, classically, a player is placed in the penalty box to "serve" the 5 minute major since the offending player has been removed from the game (Game Misconduct). Under Rule 403(d) governing Major penalties, the offending team need not immediately place a player to "serve" the penalty. The offending team may choose to place the player at a later time (but before the penalty expires) during a stoppage of play. However, if a player in not in the box at the time the penalty expires, he MAY NOT come from the bench. That team must wait for a stoppage of play and place a player in the box even if the penalty has already expired. That player can then leave the box and join play at the resumption of the game. This rule only applies to Adults and Junior.

What's the Call September

https://www.therinkexchange.com/news-and-events/whats-the-call-september

https://www.therinkexchange.com/news-and-events/whats-the-call-september#comments

Uncategorized

The RHL just wanted to check-in and see how the league is going. With the implementation of a reference for rules this season, there have been some questions regarding recent calls and interpretations. Please know, that if you have any questions about the rules, please do not hesitate to ask the official. For the next couple of weeks, we'll address some real-life calls that happened and reference the USA Hockey Rule Book.

  Eye Protection
Rule 304(c) on p.22-23 covers the rule for wearing helmets. You are not required to wear a HECC (certified) approved helmet but you must wear a helmet and it must be fastened (Yes Baslaw can wear his 50 year old helmet). The USA Hockey Rules do not require eye protection or a face mask. However, the RHL does require eye protection as a minimum ("Eddie Rule"). This eye protection need not be HECC approved.

Referees will be enforcing the rules regarding proper equipment.

  Faceoff-Locations
In week three, there was some confusion as to where a face-off should take place during a delayed penalty when the non-offending team ices the puck. The correct call would be to move the face-off to the nearest neutral zone face-off dot.

Also note that unlike the NHL or Junior Leagues, there is not automatically an offensive zone face-off for the non-offending team.

Please see Rule 409(a) page 42.

USA Hockey does not use the 9-dot face-off rule. It uses the imaginary "H", if you will, allowing faceoffs between the two end dots at any point where stoppage of play occurs.

Please see Rule 612(b) page 65.

  Boarding
In an effort to reduce injury producing situations, USA Hockey has placed an emphasis on the following type of penalties: Boarding, Charging, Checking from Behind, and Head Contact. In all of these cases, there is no longer a minor penalty only option. All of these penalties carry a minor penalty plus a misconduct (10) penalty. See the following:

  603(a) - Boarding on page 60
607(a) - Charging on page 62
608(a) - Checking from Behind on page 63
620(a) - Head Contact on page 72

We've directed the referees to call these penalties with strong consideration, but should these infractions occur, we are encouraging them to call it properly. We all don't want to get hurt as we all have jobs the next day.

  Delayed Penalties
In week three, we saw a delayed penalty situation. Offending team already had a player in the box (or even two players). A delayed penalty is signaled. The non-offending team scores a goal. The proper sequence would be to expire the least timed penalty of a player currently in the box (not the player on the ice for which the delayed signal had been given). The delayed penalty would be called and recorded and the offending player must serve his/her entire penalty.

See Rule 409(b) on page 43

Good stuff this weekend and thanks for the emails and calls about the Rules. Have a great Week 4.

Ice Skating Season Returns for Lane County

https://www.therinkexchange.com/news-and-events/ice-skating-season-returns-for-lane-county

https://www.therinkexchange.com/news-and-events/ice-skating-season-returns-for-lane-county#comments

Uncategorized

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Flint Doungchak General Manager 541-225-5123 x103 flint.doungchak@therinkexchange.com Ice Skating Season Returns for Lane County By Ryan Colby EUGENE, Ore. - The Rink Exchange, the ice sports complex in Lane County, located on the campus of the Lane Events Center, begins its normal ice skating season starting tomorrow, Friday, August 15th.
