I was hooked. The speed and artistry were amazing, but the physical aspect was what drew me in. Hockey requires you to use so many skills and to protect your own skin or the skin of a mate. Coming from a violent/abusive family, to a foster home - I had a chip on my shoulder early - then I realized that I'm a different player than the Hanson brothers, so I changed my approach towards the game. And I've enjoyed every minute of it.

What a fan base! Love the way Flint (GM of the The Rink Exchange and the Eugene Generals) embraced everyone - not just my kid, but all of the ones I saw at Try Hockey For Free Day. Love the banter, the competition, and having a cold one following a vigorous workout. I love that we have such a wide array of age/skill levels playing. I absolutely love to see these guys like Chuck playing... at age 80! He's a rock star! In essence, the management, all my cohorts, all the new skaters... It all makes for a pillar of stability in my life, and I see it in others as well. Thank you to Ken (owner of The Rink Exchange and the Eugene Generals) and his management team for doing so much for us hockey junkies. We had a rink nearby and we also skated on the frozen cranberry bogs down the street from my house. The cranberry bogs were flooded with water in the winter and made perfect skating rinks for all the neighborhood kids when they froze. Sometimes we'd pass a puck around, but I didn't play organized hockey until I was an adult.

I was living in Montana a few years ago and saw a poster recruiting new players for an adult women's hockey team. I gave birth to our daughter shortly after we arrived in Eugene and two months later I got back on the ice to play my first RHL game. I was nervous about joining a new league and playing with new people, especially since I was just starting to get back in shape after having a baby and it was my first time playing coed hockey. Once I started playing, the nervousness went away pretty quickly - everyone was really welcoming and it was so much fun to be playing hockey again. I left my job in I.T. to stay home and take care of our daughter - I hope that seeing me play hockey will set a positive example for her of how to stay active and make time for the hobbies you love doing. Sadly, my parents (me in town) moved to Northern California after that which was not nearly the hotbed of hockey as Alaska. I played some pick up hockey while I was in the Army, then had about a 20-year layoff until I went to Fairbanks to work for a year. There, I got back on skates, but as you can imagine after that long layoff, it would take more than a year to get "Fairbanks Ready" for hockey.

When I started playing hockey, way back when, it was just what kids in Alaska did. However, as I got older, i found an appreciation for the game. I tried to recapture the excitement of hockey through volleyball and other sports. but there isn't a single sport I've played where the game and the camaraderie combine like they do in hockey.

How did you start playing hockey at The Rink Exchange?

- I started playing hockey at The Rink Exchange at the behest of Sean Babb, who plays A-League. I worked with him at the time, and he said that if I could still skate then I could still play. After a couple of very lung-crunching skates - because, let's face it, nothing burns the lungs like hockey after a very long layoff - I got into C-League.

What do you do with your time when you're NOT playing hockey?

- When I'm not playing hockey, I'm usually reading mid-century European history (c'mon ladies that are reading this, you know that rocks), cooking for my children, hanging out with my girlfriend climbing falls, making or jarring jelly, or brewing beer in the garage.

How do you love MOST about playing hockey at The Rink Exchange?

- What I love most about The Rink Exchange are the people. i could spend an entire e-mail listing all of the people I walk into the rink looking forward to seeing, but I'd have to give particular shoutouts to Deron Fort, Greg Kelleher, Jim Poole, and Dave Harney. I was nervous as hell the first game after my layoff, and for a few games after that. Darren and Greg, who were on the C-League team then, both kept telling me to relax, have some fun, and let the game come back to me. Then there was Jim... Always the voice of reason. When I get frustrated that my shot doesn't feel right, he tells me to pass more. When my passing is off, he tells me to keep passing. He's usually right. Finally, Dave Harney -- that guy just flat has my number sometimes, and I appreciate it. Really makes me think about how I'm moving the puck and trying to beat the D. Jake, Patrick, Jason Falls, EVERYONE IN LOCKER ROOM 3 -- I love you guys like brothers!

There it is. It looked like so much fun and I was impressed by the athleticism of the skaters. Even though there's no checking in women's hockey, it was a much more physical game that you typically see female athletes play.

What first brought you to The Rink Exchange?

- I really missed skating after I moved to Eugene, and I was looking for something to do in the winter to stay active. I was curious about hockey, but I was a little intimidated about getting started, especially since I'd never played team sports before. Then, I saw a story in the paper about the adult hockey league at the rink, and one of the skaters who was interviewed commented on how much fun the game was and how friendly the teams were to new skaters, even those who were just learning to skate. He said that he was not a great skater, but that he had become something of a commodity in the league because he'd learned to skate backwards. "Well," I thought, "I can skate backwards!" Shortly thereafter, I signed up for the Learn to Play Class at the rink. I was immediately hooked. I signed up for my first season of league, and I've played almost every season since!

The Spring RHL Season proved to be a memorable one for Julie (back row, second from right). When I'm not working or skating, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Jen (also a hockey player), our son, and our two dogs. I love to be outdoors, whether it's working in my yard or hiking, camping, biking, or just about anything involving snow - Nordic and downhill skiing, snowshoeing, etc.

What do you do enjoy MOST about playing hockey at The Rink Exchange?

- My favorite thing about The Rink Exchange is that when you play hockey, you really do become part of the hockey family. It's a diverse family, too - you meet people of all ages, from all over the world, from different backgrounds and professions. I've made some dear, life-long friends playing hockey. Although teams vary from season to season and some teams "click" better than others, I always look forward to spending part of my week with my hockey friends. I love what The Rink Exchange is doing to keep the rink buzzing and fostering this sense of community. When I walk into the rink and see little kids running around with hockey sticks and tennis balls, adult players joking and talking while they wait for their game time, friends and family filling the stands to cheer on their loved ones... It just feels like home. I can't imagine Eugene without The Rink Exchange.

Everyone has a unique story that's led them to the ice - have you discovered yours yet? We would do yard work and other chores around the neighborhood to raise money for nets, equipment, and jerseys. Then, we started playing nearby neighborhoods in street hockey games. At age 9, I joined my first organized league. After my first season, I was asked to come tryout for the league's All-Star team. I made the team, and I haven't stopped playing since!

I grew up in Portland, Oregon. After high school, I came down to Eugene to attend Lane Community College. I then transferred to the University of Oregon and played on the hockey team there. During the offseason, I would play in the local adult league here in Eugene.

Like many folks at the rink, Joel works tirelessly to help grow the game of hockey. In other adult league sports such as basketball or soccer, you can still enjoy the sport you love and continue to play... but you don't get the "locker room" moments that you get with the RHL. Getting geared up for the game with your buddies then enjoying a cold one after the game is what it's all about! Win or lose, we still booze! Sharing a common interest and building that camaraderie is what it's all about. I grew up in the Detroit area. There is a rink every mile it seems, and getting any ice time is next to impossible. Growing up, I skated out on a lake with family, but never was any good. I could just barely stand up straight without falling down normally. While I liked to follow the Red Wings, I just never learned how to skate.

Fast forward to four years ago. One of the guys from my office moved out here from the Detroit area and he had been playing hockey for a long time. He told me how the county was going to shut down the rink and a number of people were trying to save it. For some reason ,that struck a chord with me. The only ice rink in a 120 mile radius was being threatened with closure. I thought if all these people (that included YOU, Ken Evans) were going to go to great lengths to save the rink, I would do my part to support it.

So, I came down to the rink at age 48 and watched a Hockey 101 class in September of 2011. I remember they split it in two groups, and I was watching from behind the glass. One group looked like semi-pros... just flying around on the ice, but a few of the other group looked like beginners, and of various ages. It made me think, "Ya, I can do that!" They are out there, and no one is laughing, everyone is helping everyone else. So, I started the next week, dressed top-to-bottom in borrowed gear. It was exhilarating! I also took Adult Learn to Skate lessons from EFSC (Eugene Figure Skating Club). Best decision I've made in a long time, those lessons are great. Only a few weeks later, the crew I was skating with in the Hockey 101 lessons convinced me to join C-League. No looking back for me since.

It's unlike anything else I've ever done. I think I was trying to describe it to Flint one day as, for me, playing hockey is like downhill skiing a double black diamond run while playing speed chess. It's not just a physically demanding sport, but an entire mental challenge as well!

What do you do with your time when you're NOT playing hockey?

- Normal stuff... working or travelling for work, computer gaming, spending time with the dog, or fixing the house.

What do you do you love MOST about hockey at The Rink Exchange?

- Seriously, it's the community. Keep in mind, this was Canada and a full-contact men's league. I said yes, and all was good right up until we were in the locker room and I had no idea how to dress. At this point, it dawned on them to ask if I had ever played before. When I replied with an emphatic, "NO" there was a long pause, and they asked, "But you DO know how to skate, right?" I then explained that where I was from in the U.S., the water simply never froze. They all looked at each other and decided to just put me in front of the net and told me to knock down anyone who got close to me. I was well suited for the task and had an absolute blast. Needless to say, I was pummeled and got more "face washing" and bruises that game than the rest of my years playing. I also enjoy being part of a team and get a kick out of making a good pass, stopping an opponent's effort, and handling the unpredictable elements of sports. The RHL gives me the opportunity to experience all of these things and to be a part of something special that just doesn't come with most "fitness activities" of adults who like to be physically active and stay healthy. I'm an advocate of "life long fitness" and playing in the RHL is one way I do that.

If you're considering trying hockey, there's no better place than the RHL.
