Ice Skating Season Returns for Lane County
By Ryan Colby
EUGENE, Ore. - The Rink Exchange, the ice sports complex in Lane County, located on the campus of the Lane Events Center, begins its normal ice skating season starting tomorrow, Friday, August 15th. The rink re-opens after its normal seasonal shutdown between May and August.
With temperatures expected to be in the high 80s to low 90s over the weekend, the ice couldn't return soon enough for some local residents. "We really miss the ice rink, and having it closed for the summer actually gets me more excited to skate and play hockey," said local resident Austin Stricker an almost 15 year user of the rink.
With the reopening tomorrow morning, there will be a variety of events going on at the Rink Exchange this weekend. First, the Generals will be holding their annual Training Camp where players tryout for roster spots on the upcoming tenth season. The Generals will be busy this weekend as they will hold their camp through Monday, August 18th, with their first drills starting at 8 AM. After their camp ends, the Generals will spend the next month preparing for the upcoming season, which begins in the middle of September. "The Rink has been a great home for us for nine season and we're excited to celebrate season 10 this year," commented Ken Evans, owner of the Eugene Generals.
With the Rink Exchange’s Fall Freeze starting again, there will be plenty of public skates for those interested. The first public skate will be tomorrow at 12:15; admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students, seniors, and kids (17 and younger). Skate rentals are available for just $2. An additional special public skating session will take place at 8 PM, where admission is $5 for everyone.
Additional public skating sessions are available all weekend. Visit TheRinkExchange.com for more information.
Figure skaters will also be able to take to the ice for the first time in over three months with an open figure skaters only session (Freestyle) at 9:15 AM.
Adult league players take the ice for their first time in months with the beginning of the Fall Rink Exchange Hockey League (RHL) on Sunday morning which features both experienced and novice hockey players in the local area. "45 Year of Beer League," laughed Mitch Boriskin a long time adult league player, "and looking forward to year 46."
In the coming weeks, there will also be a Eugene Celebration Hockey Tournament for the first time. The tournament runs from August 22-24, and will feature teams from all around the state.
Classes for first time skaters and adults and kids interest in hockey start soon. Contact the Rink Exchange for more information.
