Ice Skating Season Begins in Eugene
EUGENE, Ore. - The Rink Exchange reopens to the public for its normal ice skating season starting tomorrow, Thursday, August 13th.
After its seasonal shutdown for maintenance between May and August, the rink, located on the Lane Events Center, begins yet another season of ice activities. With the scorching hot weather experienced this summer, the return of ice in Eugene could not come at a more opportune time. “I’ve been looking forward all summer for ice skating season to start again,” expressed Jim Poole, a longtime user of the rink since moving from Arizona. “We can finally skate, play hockey again, and hang out with some great people.”
The rink was originally supposed to open on Saturday; however, due to faster installation of the ice, the rink has opened much earlier than expected. As a result, the Rink Exchange will have a soft open on the aforementioned Thursday as well as Friday, August 14th.
With the opening on Thursday and Friday, there will be a variety of events at the Rink Exchange throughout the weekend. First, the Eugene Generals will be holding their annual Training Camp, where players from all over the country come to Eugene in hopes of earning a spot on the team’s roster. The Generals’ camp will last the entire weekend, all the way through Monday, August 17th.
The Rink Exchange will also be hosting a philanthropic event on Saturday, August 15th, the Ice Hockey in Harlem. Ice Hockey in Harlem is an organization which offers free hockey and educational programing to low-income children, and improves the social and academic well-being of children from the Harlem community in New York. There will be two Ice Hockey in Harlem games—the first at 5:00pm, the second at 6:45pm—along with complementary Hop Valley beer and Pita Pit as well.
Adult League Hockey also returns with its summer season beginning this Sunday. The Rink Exchange Hockey League (RHL) features experienced and beginner hockey players throughout the Eugene and Springfield area. In addition to the RHL season, the Rink Exchange will be hosting its Second Annual Eugene Celebration Hockey Tournament. Running from August 21-23, the tournament will have teams from Eugene, Portland, Medford, and even Northern California.
With the annual Fall Freeze beginning yet again, there will be plenty of public skates available throughout the first month. The first public skate will be tomorrow afternoon at 1:00-3:00, with two more on Friday from 1:45-4:45 and 8:00-10:00. Admission is $7 for adults, and $5 for students and seniors. Skate rentals are available for only $2. Check out our public skate schedule for more dates and times throughout the year.
The Eugene Figure Skating Club will also begin another season at the Rink Exchange. The figure skaters will be offering their Learn to Skate classes, which start September 22nd.
For more information about ice activities or dates/times, please call the Rink Exchange at 541-225-5123 or visit the website. Look forward to another season of ice skating in Lane County!
