Intro to Hockey for kids and adults
Thinking about hockey? This is the place to try it. Intro to Hockey starts with the basics: how to fall and get back up, and how to get on and off the ice. Then it builds up to skating, stickhandling and passing, with coached small games from day one, because kids learn hockey by playing hockey.
How the class works
- Same time, separate groups. Youth and adult classes run at the same time, in separate groups with separate coaches.
- Room to play. Barriers split the ice so each group has room to play at its own level.
- Practice, not pressure. Coached drills and small games. No refereed games.

Levels
1
Beginner: for players with little or no skating or hockey experience. Goals: fall and get back up, get on and off the ice alone, and skate from point A to point B without holding on.
2
Intermediate: after Beginner. More skating, passing, shooting and stickhandling, plus small-area games.
3
Advanced: after Intermediate. Crossovers, harder stickhandling, 1v1 and 2v2 play, and learning the rules.
Kids are ready for RBL when they finish Advanced, or sooner if they can skate forward and stop. Adults are ready for RHL Delta.

FAQ
I’ve never skated. Can I still do Intro to Hockey?
Yes. If your goal is to play hockey, Intro to Hockey Beginner is the place to start. Hockey gear actually makes it easier to learn to skate, and the Beginner level is built for exactly that.
Can a parent and child sign up for the same time?
Yes. Youth and adult classes run at the same time, in separate groups.
What do I need to bring?
Your USA Hockey number. Rental gear is provided, and once you register, we’ll call or email you to book your gear fitting.
Should I take Learn to Skate or Intro to Hockey?
If you have no plans to play hockey, take Learn to Skate, hosted by EFSC. If you want to play hockey, start with Intro to Hockey Beginner.
Is Learn to Skate run by the rink?
No. EFSC runs Learn to Skate. Sign up and ask questions through EFSC.
