Hockey starts here.
Lots of players in Eugene take their very first strides on our ice. Some are 5, some are 50. We call our approach AAA hockey: Accessible, Affordable and Age Appropriate.
Accessible
Programs for beginners of every age. You don’t need to know how to skate to start Intro to Hockey.
Affordable
Rental gear for Intro to Hockey, and payment plans for RBL and the RHL.
Age Appropriate
Kids play on ice sized for them. Small ice means more puck touches, more decisions and more fun.
Kids learn by playing
Our practices look like the game. Kids work out real hockey problems instead of standing in lines.
The youth path
Three steps, one at a time:
1
Intro to Hockey. Any age, no experience needed.
2
RBL (Rootbeer League). 6U, 8U and 10U/12U. No travel.
3
Jr. Generals. Travel hockey, run by LAHA.
Not planning to play hockey? Learn to Skate with the Eugene Figure Skating Club (EFSC) is for skaters who don’t plan to play hockey. →
At 12U, it’s your family’s choice: stay in RBL, or try the Jr. Generals for travel hockey. Curious about travel hockey? Talk to us or to LAHA.
Grown-ups: Intro to Hockey, then the RHL, our adult league (Apollo, Bravo, Cascade, Delta). →
Kids learn by playing.
Our practices look like the game. Kids spend most of practice in small games, not lines.
Coaches shape each game with simple rules: fewer players, a smaller space, or a rule like “two passes before a shot.” Each rule nudges kids toward the skill we want.
Kids learn to read the play, decide and act, just like in a real game.
It can look chaotic. That’s the point: every kid is moving, touching the puck and solving problems.
We follow USA Hockey’s American Development Model and long-term athlete development, which means the right skills at the right age.
Why small ice?
Kids play on ice sized for them, the same way young soccer players use small fields.
Small ice means more puck touches, more shots, more decisions and more fun.
Bigger isn’t better at 8 years old. An NHL rink is built for adults.

New to hockey? Start with Intro to Hockey and RBL.
Here’s what parents ask most about Intro to Hockey and RBL (Rootbeer League), our youth league.
What does it cost?
Intro to Hockey is $195 for 8 weeks. RBL is about $290 to $335 a session, with payment plans. You’ll also need a USA Hockey membership.
What gear do I need?
Intro to Hockey includes rental gear and a gear fitting. Once you register, we’ll call or email you to book it. RBL needs full gear: a helmet with a full cage, gloves, pads, skates and a stick, and we have loaner gear available. A neck guard is required in all programs, and mouthguard rules depend on age group. The Pro Shop can help you find starter gear.
How much time is it?
RBL is one practice and one game a week for 8 weeks. It all happens here, with no travel.
What does a practice look like?
Small games, lots of moving and lots of puck touches. Not much standing in line.
Will my kid get to play?
Yes. Teams of 12 or fewer mean lots of ice time.
Do you keep score?
Yes. Every RBL game has an official, and we keep score and stats at every age. They’re part of learning to compete, but our focus is development, not standings.
Does my child need to know how to skate?
Not for Intro to Hockey. For RBL: can your child skate forward and stop? Then they’re ready. Not yet? Start with Intro to Hockey. (Learn to Skate with EFSC is for skaters who don’t plan to play hockey.)
What’s next after RBL?
Kids can keep playing RBL, and the Hockey Academy is a great add-on. At 12U, kids can stay in RBL or choose Jr. Generals travel hockey through LAHA.
Can I take photos?
Yes, of your own child. Please don’t post other kids without their parents’ OK. No photos or video in locker rooms, ever.
- Do I need a USA Hockey membership? Yes. USA Hockey requires a membership for its sanctioned programs, and the rink’s waiver is also required.
