Hockey sized for kids.
The Rootbeer League is our youth league. Kids play on small teams, get lots of time with the puck, and play on ice that fits their size. They get all the fun of being on a team, with none of the travel.
Accessible
No travel. Practices and games are all here at The Rink Exchange.
Affordable
About $290 to $335 a session for 8 practices and 8 games. Payment plans are available at registration.
Age Appropriate
3v3 on the Mini Sheet for 6U and 8U, and 4v4 on half ice for 10U/12U.
Practice looks like the game.
Kids play small games where they chase pucks, make choices and figure things out. Coaches set up each game to teach one thing. Fun and development go together.
What success looks like
Success at this age looks like this: your kid wants to come back, skates a little stronger each week, and tries new things with the puck.
Quick facts
| Ages | Format | Each session | Teams |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6U, 8U, 10U/12U (by birth year) | 3v3 Mini Sheet (6U, 8U) · 4v4 half ice (10U/12U) | 8 practices + 8 games | 12 players or fewer |
Three sessions a year: Fall, Winter and Spring. Every game has an official. Every kid plays a lot. Every player gets a chance to try goalie, and gear is provided. We care about touches, effort and smiles, not standings.

How it works
1
Sign up. Register on LeagueApps, or join the waitlist.
2
Get placed. Players are grouped by birth year onto small teams.
3
Practice and play. One practice and one game each week for the session.
4
Keep growing. Keep playing RBL, and add the Hockey Academy if you want more ice. At 12U, kids can stay in RBL or, if your family chooses, talk to LAHA about Jr. Generals travel hockey. →
Hockey Academy
An optional weekly add-on for RBL players. Kids work on one skill at a time, inside game-like situations, so it carries over to games. Groups: 8U and 10U/12U.
Meet the coaches
Our staff includes USA Hockey Pacific District coach developers, the people who train other coaches. Meet the RBL coaches →
Teams and game times
Game times change week to week, so check the schedule before each game.
- Rosters: families get their child’s team, roster and practice time through LeagueApps. We don’t post kids’ names on the website.

FAQ
Is it too late to join?
If the current session has started, sign up for the next one or join the waitlist. Sessions start in the fall, winter and spring.
Does my child need to know how to skate?
Can they skate forward and stop? Then they’re ready. Not yet? Start with Intro to Hockey. → /intro-to-hockey/ (Learn to Skate with the Eugene Figure Skating Club (EFSC) is for skaters who don’t plan to play hockey.)
Are there payment plans?
Yes, payment plans are available when you register on LeagueApps.
Which division is my child in?
Divisions go by birth year. See the tables above.
Do you keep score?
Yes. Every RBL game has an official, and we keep score and stats at every age. They’re part of learning to compete, but our focus is development, not standings.
Can I take photos?
Yes, of your own child. Please don’t post other kids without their parents’ OK. No photos or video in locker rooms, ever.
- What gear does my child need? Full hockey gear, including a helmet with a full cage, gloves, pads, skates and a stick. The Pro Shop can help.
- What are the rules for adults around players? Players and parents agree to USA Hockey’s SafeSport/MAAPP policies.
